About Sam Maderson

20 years of experience in working with stone

Sam Maderson is based in Kilwatermoy, near Tallow, in County Waterford, Ireland. With over 20 years of experience in working with stone, Sam began his career by restoring the family home, an old coach house in Cappoquin, Co. Waterford.

He later completed a four-year apprenticeship (2006 - 2009) in Banker Masonry —architectural stone cutting— at Weymouth School of Stonemasonry, now located in Poundbury, Dorset.

On completing this apprenticeship, Sam won a year-long scholarship with the Prince’s Foundation to study the restoration and conservation of historical buildings.

This consisted of travelling around England and Scotland working for various masonry companies such as the Cathedral Works Organisation and Laing Traditional Masonry, along with the National Trust, English Heritage and Scottish Heritage.

While there, he surveyed damaged masonry and created templates and bed moulds required to cut and install complex masonry components on various historical buildings including Lincoln Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, Dover Castle, Stowe House, Woodchester Mansion and the world heritage site of Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire.

Sam and his team of masons were mentored by Henry Rumbold MBE, Andrew Bradley of Laing Traditional Masonry and Adam Stone of Cathedral Works Organisation.

Sam was part of a team of traditional masons, carpenters, blacksmiths and fibrous lime plasterers who appeared on Channel 4’s Country House Rescue where they undertook the restoration of Kelly House in Devon.
